Chapter 06
The agile organization from the portfolio perspective
From the portfolio view, scaling should reduce coordination load and make strategic choices easier. Teams, Solution Areas, ARTs and Solution Trains create different levels of local balancing and realignment.
Scaling from portfolio
Every grouping should make coordination easier for the portfolio.
The slide sequence shows a rising complexity curve. Several teams create local backlogs; Solution Areas balance work inside smaller groups; ARTs increase realignment capacity; Solution Trains extend that pattern to several ARTs.
Many local backlogs
The portfolio still carries too much coordination work when every team is managed directly.
Local balancing
Teams that collaborate closely can solve more issues before they escalate upward.
Train-level responsiveness
ARTs make load balancing, capacity shifts, feature refinement and issue response easier.
Collaboration areas
Multiple ARTs can be grouped so the portfolio is not forced to coordinate every interface.
Portfolio design question
Which collaboration network should own this coordination problem?
A good portfolio does not pull every decision upward. It designs collaboration areas where the people closest to integrated value can refine, decide and realign quickly.
